Role overview

Transportation Security Officers help keep airports safe by screening passengers and baggage at security checkpoints. It's a non-armed role that's part security, part customer service. No prior experience or degree is required, and all training is paid.

Depending on the airport, you may be hired either directly by TSA or by a private screening company through TSA's Screening Partnership Program (SPP). At SPP airports, screening is still done under TSA oversight and federal security standards.

Key responsibilities

Security screening

Screen passengers, carry-on items, and checked baggage
Follow established procedures using screening equipment and physical screening methods when needed

Customer service

Give clear directions and help travelers move through security efficiently
Stay calm and professional in a fast-paced environment

Security support

Maintain secure entry/exit areas and respond to checkpoint issues
Communicate with supervisors and team members to keep operations running smoothly

Basic qualifications

U.S. citizenship
At least 18 years old
High school diploma or GED
Pass a background check and medical evaluation
Able to stand, walk, and lift bags for extended periods
